Essential Oils and Aromatherapy
Information and answers to common questions
What
are essential oils?Essential oils are a liquid
concentration of the aromatic compounds of plants, fruits and
flowers. The term essential indicates that the oil carries
distinctive scent (essence) of the plant from which they are derived.
Because of the high concentration of the aroma in essential oils, they
are a commonly used to scent perfumes, cosmetics, incense and in our
case, bath
salts. The most popular essential oils
are lavender, eucalyptus, citrus and mint. Often essential oils are
used in aromathery, an alternative medicine practice. The potency of
essential oils generally requires them to be diluted with a carrier
liquid, our bath salts are blended to a consistency and concentration
that does not require further dilution.Where do
essential oils come from? Most common essential oils,
including lavender, peppermint and Ylang-ylang, are extracted
by distillation, in a process that can take several hours.
Other oils, including lemon and orange oils, are simply cold-pressed as
the oil is present in sufficient quantities in these fruits. Lastly,
many flower and other very delicate oils are extracted using liquid
carbon dioxide, alcohol or other mild solvents. What is
Aromatherapy?Aromatherapy is a type of
complementary and alternative medicine that uses plant oils that give
off strong pleasant aromas (smells) to promote relaxation, a sense of
well-being, and healing. Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to
any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes
in combination with other alternative medical practices and spiritual
beliefs.What
